If you own a Tesla car, you could either charge it at a third-party charging station with per-minute pricing using a Chademo adapter or at a Tesla Supercharger station or even at your home garage. The prices for charging, either way, are quite comparable. However, charging from the comfort of your home is much more convenient and less stressful for most people and that’s where the question of which adaptor to use comes. To charge your Tesla you could either use an adaptor for a 110-volt outlet (NEMA 5-15) which is included as standard equipment with all new Tesla cars, or you could charge from the comfort of your home using an installed wall connector for your Tesla, which could charge your Tesla in about 6 to 10 hours. An adaptor basically converts your main power AC into smaller, usually DC voltage that’s needed to charge the battery of your car.
Below are some of the best Tesla charging adaptors available in the market at the moment.

NEMA 10-50P ADAPTER
This adapter is used to convert NEMA 10-50 outlets to Tesla. The adapter works perfectly and its low profile is perfect for a good fit into the 10-50 outlet which has a hinged cover that one cannot easily physically remove. The hinged cover prevents one from using a different brand adaptor because the prongs could not be physically seated flush into the outlet.
This adaptor fits the bill perfectly. The units remain cool to the touch and have a heavy-duty ergonomic grip for plugging into and removing from the 10-50 outlet.

NEMA 14-50 ADAPTER
The NEMA 14-50 Gen 2 adapter lets you charge your Tesla vehicles at NEMA 14-50 outlets. The adaptor is compatible with the Gen 2 mobile connector which is included in all new Tesla vehicles. The NEMA 14-50 outlets are commonly found in many homes and are typically used for electric ranges and cloth dryers. This adaptor contains an internal circuit that monitors the plug temperatures and communicates with the car to automatically set the appropriate 32 amp charging current. No need to manually set the current – simply plug it in. The cable is 12 inches long and is thick for maximum efficiency and a more comfortable grip. The adapter has a convenient folding handle, making it easier to plug in and unplug; and safer too, as it keeps your hands away from the outlet. The doctor is easy to use as you simply pull out the original cord from your mobile connector and insert this one in its place.

CHADEMO ADAPTER
Chademo adaptors are some of the most widely used among Tesla owners. They are however quite pricey at about $450. Chademo charging stations have been installed in many areas. The name chademo is a pun, and short for Japanese for, “how about a cup of coffee?”, As it was designed to give the target vehicle an 80% charge in about 30 minutes. Hence very efficient if you want a quick charge while you catch up on coffee.
How to use a chademo adapter
- Open the charge port of the car.
- Identify the Chademo hose on the charge point.
- Shake any rainwater out of the connector.
- Note which way up the chademo connector has to plug into the Tesla adaptor.
- Insert the Chademo into the adaptor and then plug the free end of the adaptor into the car.
- Ensure that the connector is locked into the adaptor.
- Use the controls on the charge points to start the charge. This will usually involve selecting Chademo, presenting your membership card, and pressing a button to confirm that you have connected the cable to the car.
- Wait for the charging to start. if it doesn’t start, double-check that the connector is correctly inserted and locked, then attempt to start the charge again.
- Monitor the charge using the displays or the Tesla mobile app.
- When you wish to leave, you must terminate the charge using the controls on the charge point, which usually requires you to present your membership card again. You must use the same card you used to start the charge.
- Now remove the adaptor from the car and the chademo plug from the adaptor.
