Dogs can be the cutest pets and the greatest companions. We see them almost every other home. They have proved to be worthy companions time and again. They walk the blind and the elderly, take care of kids and even go to stores in some cases. Dogs are even used by the police and drug specialists to sniff and locate scents. If those aren’t enough reasons to own a dog, then you might want to find out why dog experts suggest that you own one.

If your dog is like mine, whose life goal is to be around me 99% of the time, you probably take it along when you travel, be it for short trips or just long ones that take hours or even days. Traveling with your dog can be a real challenge especially when you’re doing it for the first time. I suggest you read these tips before going on a trip with your dog.

Cars are designed and crash-tested to transport humans (not animals) safely. The seats are also made for human beings and may not be the most comfortable place to rest your dog, especially if you’re going on long trips. The dog should have its own specially designed seat or hammock to help it travel more comfortably.

No matter the method you use, your dog shouldn’t sit in the front seat under any circumstances – securing them in the cargo area or back seat behind a front seat is safer. The risks are totally not worth it. Traveling with the dog in the front seat is dangerous to the dog’s life as the airbags deploy with great force in case of emergencies and this may badly injure the dog, or even kill it if it is hit by the airbag. The dog may also slip between your legs and step on the gas or brakes, potentially causing accidents. Having it in the front seat will also distract you when you drive and that’s a compromise to your safety, that of your dog, and other road users as well.

The dog seats are very important for your dog’s safety. They use straps that attach to your car’s seat belt system, the seat base, or the seat and center console. A chest harness keeps your pet from roaming, and in case of an accident, acts like a child restraint, distributing its weight on impact and keeping it confined. This also reduces the possibility of a dog becoming airborne during a collision and decreasing the risk of serious injury to the dog.

We compiled some of the best crash-tested dog car seats in the market right now.

  • PupSaver Plaid Crash-tested Dog Car Seat

This crash-tested, rear-facing design will catch your dog upon impact and act as a protective barrier to prevent contact with hard surfaces. Five total seatbelt-grade plastic clips (reversible for use behind the driver and passenger seats) lock PupSaver in place and integrate with the seatbelt pretensioner in case of an accident to pull PupSaver safely over your dog.

It has full polyfill throughout and additional stitching, reinforced nylon backing at all attachment points.

It features heavy-duty metal j-hooks for lower LATCH (child safety seat) anchors in the back seat. A new all-metal tether attachment system provides security at the base of the seat.

It can be used in the front or back seat and can also double as a pet bed while traveling.

  • Sleepypod Mobile Pet Bed

The bed is devised so that your pet can spread out in the way that is most natural for his or her sleeping style. The round shape will contour around your pet’s body providing yet another layer of coziness. Because your pet will already be living in the Sleepypod, traveling will become much easier and less stressful for everyone. Sleepypod pampers your 15 pound or smaller pet in luxurious ultra-plush and foam, providing comfort and security. The beauty of the Sleepypod is its versatility. A dog that needs to be aware of its surroundings at all times can be just as easily accommodated as the cat who likes its privacy. The secret is in the adjustable dome top. Removing the top altogether will give your pet easy access to a standard pet bed, but as needs change, so will the options. In times of fear or stress, the dome can be opened or closed by unzipping the center zipper and adjusting the sides.

The black, ultra plush included in every Sleepypod is 100% polyester and is easily maintained with a quick vacuum or a dip in the washing machine: cold water, gentle cycle with like colors.

All other components can be wiped clean with a damp cloth.
